Proper fire protection will lower how much you pay for insurance, and an ergonomically-designed office will prevent repetitive-strain injuries.

Determine the prices of your products. If you are creating a product of your own, first determine how much it will cost to make. The standard formula for pricing a certain item should be double the cost associated to it. Use this formula to determine what your wholesale cost should be. To obtain a retail price, triple the cost.

Before you venture into a home-based business, ask yourself why you want to start a business. Your reasons might include: you want to be your own boss; you want to express your own creativity; you want to supplement your income; or, it might be others. Your reasons for wanting to start a business will influence your decision on what type of business you start.

Obtain all necessary permits and licenses. If you sell a product, you may need a state sales-tax certificate, and if customers visit your home, you may need an occupancy permit. License and zoning laws can be complicated but can usually be found online. If you're unsure, it's best to hire a lawyer. Obeying the laws will help you avoid being fined or even losing your business.
