By Douglas Anderson

Turntables are circulating rotating platforms which are found in phonographs which are also being known as gramophones or record players. Phonographs are common devices in the history which are being used for playing some sound recordings. The structure of a turntable may either be made from an inexpensive flanged steel stamping or a costlier heavy aluminum casting.

A needle is an important component of turntable because it serves as the connection between the sounds and the device. And for this reason, this must be occasionally cleaned and replaced for proper functioning. Through this article, you can learn on the basic steps on the proper replacement of the turntable needles. To properly change the needles, make sure that these steps are followed carefully for ensuring that your vinyl records or record players play a great sound.

Finding for the right needle. Shoppers should not only consider the metal tip which is touching the record. They also need to purchase the housing of the needle which will fit to the cartridge. If ever you have some difficulties in determining the types of needle that you will need for the player, you can try on searching from the directories via online or from its papers that came along with the purchase.

Obtaining other necessary supplies. Needles are not the only supplies needed but these would also include a compressed air canister and needle nose pliers. You can choose from the different options of compressed air which you think you are comfortable to use with. Compressed air cans are really not that essential in a replacement process. However, these can be very useful when you clean your recording players before inserting the new needles.

Prepare your record player. Make sure that before you are going to remove any parts, the player must be turned off. Speakers must also be turned off and as well the built in features such as the preamp. Then after is locating the lock or the lever function from the arm of the player. Remove it for releasing the arm. If headshell or the carrier of your cartridge is removable, unscrew it so that the needles can be accessed easily.

Remove the old component. Exposing the old component can be done by lifting the arm of device. Then after, gently pull, grip, and wriggle the sides out to make it lose. Stuck components can be picked up with the use of nose pliers. The purpose of these pliers is to wriggle and free the component from a cartridge. Use your compressed air for spraying the area of the needles and clean any debris.

Insert the newly purchased needle into your cartridge. The new component surely comes with the proper instructions or directions, so follow them properly during the installation. But if there are no instructions that come with it, just simply insert it to the same place where the old one came out. Keep on holding its top and press it gently forward. Avoid on forcing it to avoid breakage and damage.

Testing the record player. Your device must be tested after all processes to test the installation. Play the device and listen carefully to the popping, snapping, and skipping sounds.

If the needle is the not the reason for any popping or skipping noises, the problem may be with the other part of the player or with the recording itself. These noises may be fixed by adjusting the arms counterweight. Taking the device into a professional for an evaluation and for repair is the last option.
