Effective Strategies To Counter Human Trafficking

By Jeffrey Butler

Public proclamations on the end of slavery are deceitful by causing the masses to assume that human trafficking came to an end. Unfortunately, it is still thriving underground. It takes individual and community effort to counter human trafficking in its present day format. Here are ways to help stop this vice.

Insist on production of genuine papers by immigrants and anyone you will be engaging. A lot of these trafficked persons lack identification documents. They will offer excuses for lack of documents or because of intimidation. Once you insist, the opportunities will close. Report cases of people without identification documents to enable law enforcers to take necessary restoration actions.

Push corporate organizations in your radar to publicly declare their stand on the issue. This is meant to intimidate perpetrators and create a hostile environment for the vice to thrive. Once corporate organizations take a stand, others will follow suit. The people working for these organizations will also join the campaign. You have a larger group of crusaders, making it easier to achieve desired goals. They spread the demand to their suppliers, clients and associates. An entire sector will catch the fever and help end this wickedness.

Support victims to find justice and also integrate in the community. Help them get to authorities in case they need help or rescue. Provide opportunities for employment because the victims cannot compete fairly in the market. An employer could set aside several opportunities to accommodate released victims. Once they are financially empowered, they will be excellent champions for abolition of the vice.

Organize sensitization campaigns at local level. These are activities to raise awareness on continued existence of this vice and how individuals can participate in stopping it. Work closely with religious organizations and community groups. The school is also one of the avenues you can use to change the situation, especially targeting the future. Show participants how to spot victims and where they can direct them for help.

Play your professional role to provide assistance. There are services that trafficking victims will always require. They include health care, legal representation, highlight in the media and legal enforcement, among others. Watch for victims seeking your services and assist them to get help from authorities. Be lenient to these victims and enable them to find justice.

Do not entertain this wickedness at personal level. This is especially important for employers and consumers. Only take in persons whose identity and status is verifiable. Buy goods and consume services from organizations that have taken a stand and put measures in place to end the vice. In case you come across such a case, report it to authorities. People around you must know that you do not condone this evil.

Publicizing human trafficking issues creates necessary awareness and contributes to its end. Perpetrators will be afraid because everyone is fighting against their actions. Individual efforts will contribute to the end of the problem or its reduction. Victims also need help and support to hasten their recovery.
