Why You Should Practice Gun Safety

By Bob Albert Lewis

We hear a lot about gun violence every day, and sometimes we hear a few things about gun safety, but with the idea that you "need" a gun to protect yourself, gun safety often takes a back burner to gun control.

Things do not always turn out as well as they do in movies, when it comes to firearms issues. If you draw your firearm to protect yourself from an intruder, there is no assurance that things might go well. Here are some major tips to ensure that your firearms are handled safely.

When someone comes into your property without your authority, your first instinct is to draw out your firearm. Things can quickly go out of control, especially if you are not quite proficient at using a firearm. The intruder can grab the firearm from you and use it on you.

Your children should not be able to access any firearms that you own. Only 18 percent of children have had their parents talk to them about firearms. This is among families that own firearms. 52 percent of parents who do not have firearms do not discuss this issue with their children. At the beginning of 2016, 77 people were shot by minors, out of this, 23 people were shot by toddlers.

In most cases, with very young children, the victim is the child themselves, but toddlers have also shot their siblings and parents. Many of these incidents end with fatalities - and there have been cases where the gun belonged to a visitor.

One of the ways you can keep your kids safe is by teaching them how to stay safe and know how to handle firearms. The best action is to ensure that your kids cannot access the forearm in the first place. But in case they do, they should know the best way to handle it to prevent accidents.
